Ginger Cutout cookies

Ingredients

1 c sugar
2 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp cloves
1/2 c dark corn syrup
4 c flour mixed with 1 1/2 tsp baking soda
1 T ginger
1/2 c water
1 c softened butter
ornamental frosting

Directions

In small saucepan, bring to boil sugar, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, water and corn syrup; remove from heat.  Pour over butter in large bowl; stir until butter melts, then cool to lukewarm.  Stir in flour mixture; mix well.  Cover and chill overnight.  Let dough soften slightly at room temp.  Divide in fourths.  On lightly gloured sufrace, roll out each piece 1/8 inch thick.  With ginger man, cut out dough.  Transfer to cookie sheets (poke hole in tops of cookies with a toothpick for decor use).  Bake at 375 for 12-15 minutes.  Cool cookies on racks.  Decorate

Ornamental Icing

Mix 1 egg white, 1 c powdered sugar, and 1/2 tsp tartar (thin with milk if needed).
